A direct ophthalmoscope is a hand-held instrument for examination of the inside of the eye. It has lenses to focus on the different structures of the eye: the cornea, the lens, the aqueous and vitreous humour, and the surface of the retina.
A direct ophthalmoscope has a rechargeable battery, a variable light source, and may have a number of filters for image enhancement. It provides a monocular, non-stereoscopic (2D), narrow field about 5° view. The image is erect (not reversed nor inverted) and magnified about 15X.
